Phil Mickelson said in a press conference in Malaysia this week that he was going to cut down on the number of tournament he plays in next season. Focusing primarily on the Majors, – Not surprising considering he will be 44 next year and has not won the US Open yet.

Phil: “I am going to start cutting a certain percentage of events next year and I’m not sure which ones those willย be.”

“I want to give myself opportunities to play and compete in the big tournaments, mainly saying, the majors and I’m putting less importance on other events,” said the three-times winner of the U.S. Masters.

“My whole purpose and focus will be… participating in certain tournaments that will help me play well in those majors, so a tournament that is taking place two months prior or after a major championship that has no impact on my ability to perform well in a major, those are tournaments that I won’t put as much importance on.

“I just don’t know how it is going to play out right now. I know that I am going to start cutting a certain percentage of events next year and I’m not sure which ones those will be.”

Phil will likely play in 16 or 17 events next year.ย  It is speculated that he will play in the Farmers(at Torrey Pines, his home course), Waste Management(Defending Champion), Northern Trust at Riviera, ATT Pro-Am at Pebble Beach (won 4 times) Then Houston, Augusta National, Quail Hollow, The Players, The US Open in Pinehurst,ย  The Scottish Open (defending Champ) The Open Championship, Bridgestone, Then the PGA at Valhalla KY.
